Animal technology is a specialist sector that covers the care and welfare of laboratory animals involved in developing treatments for diseases, new methods of diagnosis, and scientific research.

The sector includes positions such as animal technician, laboratory animal carer and laboratory animal researcher or animal facilities manager.

There are an estimated 310 people working in the Animal Technology industries in Victoria. The largest employer is The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research (WEHI) which covers three sites at Parkville, Bundoora and Kew. They are followed by CSL, Monash University, and then CSIRO. Hospitals and TAFE Institutes are other main employers of Animal Technologists. The Australia and New Zealand Laboratory Animals Association represents the industry.

Jobs typically align to Certificate III or Diploma levels.
