The Victorian Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions has identified Food and Fibre as a priority industry. Victoria accounts for one third of Australian food and fibre production, valued at $14.1 billion. Dairy exports stand at nearly 80%.

Growth areas are in meat, wool, prepared foods and wine. Victoria is the highest value exporting state for:

  • dairy (79 per cent)
  • animal fibre (53 per cent)
  • prepared foods (38 per cent)
  • horticulture (45 per cent)
  • skins and hides (47 per cent)

Occupations in Demand

The Department of Jobs and Small Business carries out research to identify skill shortages in the Australian labour market.  It identifies Baker as a skills shortage in Victoria.  Nationwide, primary industries are experiencing skills shortages in the following sectors:
