The Victorian agricultural sector is very broad, generally falling into the following categories:
- livestock farming and dairy production (e.g. sheep, beef, horses, goats, pigs, poultry etc),
- broadacre cropping (e.g. grains, oils, sugarcane, cotton)
- production horticulture (e.g. vegetables, nuts, berry and citrus fruit, sun-drying fruit and grapes, vineyard operation, and flowers (floriculture))
- support services
There are also many other niche sectors, including commercial composting, beekeeping and organic production.
The industry includes various support services (e.g. sheep and wool harcesting, grain storage), rural merchandising, irrigation and agricultural chemical specialisations. Some farming enterprises conduct a mix of livestock, broadacre and production horticulture activities.
Victoria is home to nearly one quarter of Australia’s farms. Over 20,000 farms provide full and part time employment to around 88,000 workers*.
