Free TAFE courses

From 1 January 2019, the Victorian Government has offered Free TAFE for Priority Courses.   The scheme covers tuition fees for priority non- apprenticeship courses as well as pre-apprenticeship courses for eligible students. In primary industries the following priority courses are eligible:

Apprenticeship  pathway courses

  • Certificate II in Horticulture
  • Certificate II in Meat Processing (Food Services)
  • Certificate II in Baking
  • Certificate II in Production Nursery

 Non-Apprenticeship courses

  • Certificate II in Agriculture
  • Certificate III in Agriculture
  • Certificate IV in Agriculture
  • Certificate III in Agriculture (Dairy Production)
  • Certificate III in Horticulture

Reintroduction of Trade Papers

In August 2018, following the Victorian Skills Commissioner’s (VSC)  Victorian Apprenticeship and Traineeship Taskforce Report (Rebalance and Relaunch),  a Ministerial Direction was released under the Education and Training and Reform Act 2006 to authorise the re-introduction of trade papers.  From January 2019 all apprentices that completed after October 2013 will be eligible for a free, individually numbered and secure trade certificate.

Head Start

Head Start is providing $49.8m over 4 years to deliver a more flexible way for students to progress their senior secondary studies and vocational experience.  Students at participating schools can choose to take an extra year to complete their VCE or VCAL. while increasing the workplace employment component of their on-the-job training.

Tech Schools Initiative

The Victorian Government has invested $128 million to create 10 high-tech centres of learning across the state that will use leading-edge technology, discovery and innovation to deliver the advanced education and training that Victorian school students will need to flourish in the rapidly changing global economy.
